Physiotherapy and back pain

60% of adults suffer from back pain every year, and half become chronic sufferers. Most of those chronic back pain sufferers are stuck in a cycle of inactivity to avoid the pain. This inactivity creates an unhealthy lifestyle which in turn reduces strength, endurance, range of motion, and quality of life.

Back pain is most often the result of an injury, overuse or poor posture, but there are other causes of back pain such as inflammation, or in rare cases, more serious problems such as progressive diseases affecting bones and joints. The human back is basically a highly complex system of interlocking elements including the vertebrae, discs, facet joints, ligaments and muscles. Owing to such a complex structure, an episode of back pain needs a strong physiotherapy-based rehabilitation program.

Encouraging early movement and exercise is the intervention of greatest benefit in most cases. If you are prone to back pain, our physiotherapists can show you the most appropriate exercises for your problem.

Aged care & falls prevention programs

Falls can happen to anyone, but, unfortunately, as we age falls can become more common and you are more likely to injure yourself. As you grow older, changes in your body, weakening muscles and stiffening joints can increase those chances.

The good news is that there are a number of things you can do to help prevent falls and minimise your injuries if you do fall. Knowing your risk factors and taking a few precautions is a good start.

A physiotherapist may be able to help you with balance and strengthening exercises. You can also ask them about walking aids to help you move about more safely. It’s important that any equipment you do use is adjusted to meet your needs and well maintained. For example, a physiotherapist can help make sure that your walking frame is the correct height for you and teach you how to use it safely.

Shockwave therapy

Shockwave treatment involves the application of short, frequent, and high intensity bursts of mechanical energy (in the form of a shockwave) into soft-tissue that is injured, scarred, or contains adhesions, or is painful, or inflamed. When appropriately applied, shockwaves can increase local blood flow, improve healing response, break apart scar tissue and adhesions, reduce muscle spasm, and directly decrease pain.

Temporomandibular joint treatment

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull and is the most used joint in the body. Your jaw joints allow movement and are involved with eating, drinking, talking and breathing and facial expressions. There is one on each side of your face, in front of each ear.

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) can cause pain, abnormal jaw movements and joint noises. They are quite common. Our physotherapist can perform an examination and assess your jaw range of motion, muscle tension and length and TMJ co-ordination and movement pattern.

Working with your dentist and other health professionals, our physiotherapists can help with corrective treatment and gentle jaw-strengthening exercises.

Physiotherapy treatment of Vertigo

Vertigo is considered a sensation of whirling and loss of balance. Often it feels like the room is spinning. The most common cause of vertigo is BPPV (or Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo). Once we’ve excluded any other conditions causing your dizziness and identified the problem as BPPV it can be quite easily treated using the Epley Manoeuvre to re-position the particles in the inner ear back where they belong.

Real time ultrasound assessment

Real time ultrasound is safe and completely pain free and is the same technology that is used in pregnancy ultrasound. This technology is used to assess soft tissue injuries, muscle control and function, and to grade suspected muscle or tendon tears, track soft tissue repair and teach clients how to correctly recruit core muscles.
