There are many benefits of resistance training for women. It is a fantastic way to build overall body strength, gain lean muscle mass, reduce body fat percentage, improve hormonal health, decrease risk of osteoporosis and reduce the risk of injury.
A healthy body is what most of us strive for
Our everyday tasks become easier, our energy levels increase, we sleep better and our overall sense of wellbeing is increased. A woman’s hormones naturally limit the amount of muscle you will build. If you’re not sure where to start, speak to our specialist Sports Physiotherapist.
Unfortunately many women can be hesitant in either commencing a strengthening based program, or adding resistance based exercises to their current exercise routine. Reasons for this may include fear of injury, misbeliefs about becoming ‘too big/bulky’ in terms of muscle mass, and a lack of knowledge surrounding how to start a program. At Macarthur Physiotherapy we have a passionate team experienced in prescribing exercise programs with your goals and body in mind, including injury prevention, injury management as well as general health, strength and conditioning. We are dedicated to empowering women to help strengthen their bodies, look great, feel fantastic and improve their overall health, with education surrounding exercise at the forefront of this drive.

Resistance Training program
With our Resistance Training program, the aim is to use resistance and muscular contraction to build the strength, maintain flexibility and balance, endurance, and muscle tone and size. When you do resistance training repeatedly and consistently, your muscles become stronger.
Our training incorporates –
- Your own body weight – squats, push-ups and chin-ups
- Free weights – dumbbells, barbells and kettlebells
- Weight machine – devices that have adjustable seats with handles attached either to weights or hydraulics
- Medicine balls or sand bags – weighted balls or bags
- Resistance bands – like giant rubber bands- these bands provide continuous resistance throughout a movement
Resistance training may help reduce or prevent cognitive decline in older people.
